Day 87 - NY Rt 28&30 Bicycle Route - September 6th

Updated: Oct 30, 2022

Old Forge, NY to Long Lake, NY

I had enjoyed the three nights spent at Old Forge. When I was packing to leave, I had a nice surprise - there were deer in the common area. They didn't run away when they saw me - I guess they are used to having people around.

As I was leaving Old Forge, on impulse, I decided to make a left turn rather than the right turn indicated by the map and maps app. For a brief moment I thought 'you may regret this', but carried on anyway. It turned out to be a good idea - the asphalt road soon turned into a hard packed dirt road leading through the forest. It was quite spectacular. I did manage to get myself 'lost' a few times when I took some wrong turns, but corrected very quickly. The entire segment was absolutely amazing, and especially going through the Bear Mountain area. It was wonderful to hear the sounds of nature, only very occasionally interrupted by the sound of a forestry vehicle.

At one point I realized that I had been taking in a lot of liquid, and needed to get more water. Fortunately I came across a Rangers encampment and managed to get water from the Ranger on duty.

The intent had been to cycle to Newcomb, NY, but when I arrived at Long Lake, 14 miles shy of my planned destination I wasn't feeling that great, so decided to find accommodation in Long Lake and get a good rest.

Just Before Leaving Old Forge

Deer figured out how to open the bin, and look for breakfast with others find something to eat in the grass
