Augusta, MO to Wood River, IL
After a good breakfast, and snapping a few photos around town, I got back on the road, and down the (in)famous hill to get back onto the Katie Trail.
A couple of miles into the ride I saw vehicles parked on the side of the trail, and getting closer saw they were law enforcement vehicles. Obviously something serious had gone wrong. Much later at a trailhead, I met two local guys on the return part of a morning ride. They said that a teen had fallen and not survived. At Saint Charles, the trail was closed for repair, and all cycles were diverted to a secondary road for about 3/4 mile. While riding along, I saw a chalkboard ad for fresh watermelon. Well, I could not let an opportunity like this pass me by. I went in and asked the lady whether it would be possible to sell me just a piece of watermelon rather than the whole one. She cut a wedge that was about quarter of the watermelon.
I was in heaven. It was crispy, sweet, cool, and exactly what I needed at the time. Thank you for farm stalls!!
