Mokane, MO to Augusta, MO
The Katy trail was not what I had expected. I thought it was an amazing stretch of packed surface that carries on and on. This turned out to not be true. The trail is maintained by local authorities, each with different priorities and resources. There were sections where work had started, but was never completed, sections that were closed to all traffic, and sections that had not been maintained for an extensive period of time. In stark contrast there are sections where the surface is well maintained, the trees have been trimmed and comfortable rest areas have been provided.
Oh well, can’t win them all I suppose!
Coming into Augusta was a surprise. As I turned off the trail onto the road between the trees leading into the town, I had this massive steep hill looming up in front of me. I had a bit of momentum coming into it, but that advantage did not last long. Somehow I managed to get up there, but not without the legs and lungs complaining bitterly.
The town, built on top of the hill is quaint, clean, and well kept. There are a bucket load of B&Bs and Inns. I managed to get accommodation because of their bush telegraph/village grapevine communication system.
I stayed at the Lindenhof Bed & Breakfast, which was great. See link below.
