Day 42 - RAA Sect 6 - July 23rd

Pierre, SD to Oacoma, SD

I expected Fort Pierre to be an extension of Pierre. Boy was I wrong. Turns out that Fort Pierre is much more of a quaint place. Me thinks it has to do with tourism and history.

Pierre is really the business center, where Fort Pierre is the historical part of the city. The Arikara Creek creates a definitive line between the two.

My plan was to go as far as Lower Brule today, where there is a campsite, if time permitted though, I would go on to Fort Thompson.

All went well along the way with beautiful scenery, and horses entertaining me (or the other way around) along the way, until about 18 miles from Lower Brule. The road was blocked off with big detour signs. That detour turned a 60 mile ride into just over 90 miles.

Turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Got a cabin in the campsite in Oacoma, so didn’t have to pitch a tent for the night.
