This was one of those crazy days.
The initial plan was to go to La Grange and spend the night there. This was a solid plan until I got on the road. There was a reasonable wind, and the countryside was mainly big farms, with the occasional oil drill.
I managed to get a good tempo going which meant I got to La Grange closing in on lunch time. While I was having lunch at a local chicken restaurant (one doesn't see too many of those around) I decided that I had enough daylight left to take me to Burton.
I managed to get to Burton before sunset and started looking for accommodation. The first thing I discovered was that there are no campgrounds/RV Parks within a 10-mile radius. Next, the owner of the only lodge/motel in town died a few months previously, and the business was closed.
Next, I found a place that advertised available accommodation by either directly contacting the owner in California or booking through AirBnB. I had no luck with either of these options.
By this time it was getting dark, so I decided to go to the local Dollar General and pick up some necessities. Whilst in the DG, a fellow shopper asked whether it was my bike outside, and said that she passed me on her way back from work. This led to a conversation about accommodation, and she suggested the public baseball field, which happens to be right next to the DG store. I pitched my tent under the pavilion where I had access to power and water, protection from inclement weather, and as a bonus, picnic tables where I prepared and had my dinner and breakfast.
All is well that ends well!
