Day 24 - Tue, Oct 29 - El Paso to Fort Hancock (Texas)

Updated: Nov 18, 2024

I wanted to get ready early so I could find a place to have breakfast before I left.

The problem was that I couldn’t find any place that was open that early, and the lady at the hostel reception, who lives outside of the city, couldn’t help either.

I decided to walk a few blocks to see if I could find an open restaurant or diner.

As I started walking down the street, I noticed a person from the traffic department emptying parking meters and thought that if anybody knew of a place to eat, that should be the person.

I walked up to him and asked whether he knew of any breakfast places that he may know that would be open early in the area. He didn't hesitate and directed me to a small Mexican restaurant located around the corner from where we were. I had a great breakfast and got on my way. The morning traffic was a bit of a nightmare though, but I eventually got out of the city.

Once I had left the boundaries of the city, I noticed the area turning into agricultural lands. No dairy farms; this time it was alfalfa beans, cotton, pistachios, and other nuts I couldn't identify (mainly because I didn't stop to go and check).

I didn't know how they harvest Pistachios, so it was fascinating to watch. There were two tractor-like vehicles, one on each side of the tree. One is purely a catcher, and the other a catcher/shaker. These vehicles move from tree to tree, and once they are in place, the shaker is engaged around the tree trunk and starts vibrating. This shakes the tree causing the nuts to fall from the tree. While the shaking/vibrating is going on, both vehicles catch the falling Pistachios and transfer them to an enclosed hopper.

By the time I got to Fort Hancock, I was shattered. The wind was blowing nonstop, gusting up to 35 mph, so a good night's rest was in order.
