It took a while to get out of the city this morning, but eventually got on the service road and out of the city area.
This part of New Mexico seems to be primarily dairy farming. There are a lot of dairy farms, and each one seems to be run as a registered business. I stopped counting the number of name boards proudly identifying themselves as an LLC.
At one point the road was closed to all traffic. There had been a road accident and a fire, so all traffic was sent on a 10-mile detour. Not a bad route though, as there was a nice long downhill for me.
Getting into El Paso, I started looking for a place to sleep and found a hostel. I managed to book a room online and made my way there.
To my surprise, it is a hotel that is also a hostel (Gardner Hotel and Hostel).
It is an amazing quaint place that opened in 1922 as a hotel and is still operating as a hotel. The hostel part of it was started quite a few years ago. It’s a grande old place that seems to be stuck in a time warp. They could easily add a museum to the name as well.
I spent a lot of time with the host telling me about and showing me historical artifacts relating to the place. I found the history quite fascinating. Click on the link to read about the history https://www.gardnerhotel.com/hotel-history
