I left Silver City this morning and immediately started with a short steep climb.
Not what the legs needed so early, but I had to get to the crossroad at the top of the mountain, and the place I stayed over was built on the side of the mountain below the crossroad. Fortunately, it was only about 150 yards until I turned left at the crossroad and even though I was still climbing it wasn't as steep, so easier on the legs.
The views are absolutely wonderful from there. The road meanders at the top of the mountain for a few miles before dropping down. I always enjoy the downhills.
My map took me off the surfaced road onto a gravel road. The first three miles were pretty good with no corrugations, so I managed a good pace. Unfortunately, that didn't last long. The road gradually became worse and worse. At one point I had to get off the trike and push it through the mixture of shale and sand.
Needless to say, at the first opportunity (about 8 miles into the gravel road) I joined the Interstate for the rest of the way.
