I left Lordsburg this morning for Silver City with tired legs, but feeling good and looking forward to a break as well as a visit to the Gila Ancient Cave Dwellings.
I knew that there was more climbing to be done, but boy was I caught off guard. I didn't do my routine elevation check for the next day so I was unprepared for what Mother Nature had waiting for me. All was well and pretty relaxed for the first 10 miles, then the climbing started. I was pleasantly surprised though when I got to the 6,355 ft elevation marker and saw that I was crossing the Continental Divide.
Not far from there, about 100ft or so, going East, there is a trailhead with a basic campsite. This simple sighting made me so happy, as it indicated a downward trend for the rest of the way.
Silver City is a reasonably big city with mining, agriculture, and a public university (Western New Mexico University) that keeps it going.
I checked into a hotel and was very pleasantly surprised when they offered to lock my bike up safely in the hotel storage room.
The trike does create a challenge when I book into hotels, as it is a big vehicle that does not always fit through doorways, and it is nearly impossible when a room is not on the ground floor. For this reason, I normally go to a Motel, as many of the rooms are at ground level.
With my restricted diet, I usually have a very low expectancy of finding something to eat. Well, this one surprised me. Just about every restaurant in Silver City serves GF food, including the local brewery, and there is a local supermarket that stocks GF food.
Heaven!
