Had a good restful night at Safford, and was ready for a long day.
After studying the maps last night, I realized that there are no campsites or other accommodations between Safford and Lordsburg. I could do wild camping if I run out of light, but the preference would be to cover the ~ 80 miles today and get my butt to Lordsburg in New Mexico.
Just before the NM state line I came through a small farming town with a service station and a general dealer. I decided to stop at the service station to stock up on Body Armor and protein bars if possible, and pulled in.
I managed to get a banana as well, and while I was sitting there eating the banana I saw an old firehouse across the street from the service station and decided to take a picture.
I was getting ready to take the photo when the wildest sequence of events played out in front of me. A lady who came to fill up her car got into her car but forgot to remove the pump hose from the gas tank. Someone from the service station came rushing out of the store yelling in unison with other folks who had seen what had happened. They were all screaming for the woman to stop, and then the man from the service station ran into a guy delivering beer. This sent boxes of beer flying in front of another customer on his way in to fill up his vehicle. I wish I had managed to catch all of this on video.
Bottom line, all ended well, with nothing serious to worry about. I, on the other hand, was in stitches, as I never thought I would ever see anything like this in my life. This only happens in the movies, right?
Everything settled down again, and we all got on our way. I was still chuckling as I rode off and even managed to get the picture I was after.
The rest of the ride was uneventful, which was a good thing, as I needed to get to Lordsburg before sunset.
