Today's ride was from Globe to Fort Thomas.
Because I tend to go off-route to find places to stay overnight, I use Google Maps to get me back to my route. This morning was one of those mornings where I cursed Google Maps. It happens quite often that Google Maps sends you on a non-existent road, or completely in the wrong direction.
This morning it decided to send me down a small community driveway that ended up at someone's gate. Fortunately, one of the folks who lives there came to my rescue and gave me the directions to where I could join my route.
He just laughed when he saw how irritated I was with Google Maps, and told me not to worry, I'm not the first cyclist that has landed up there, and he is sure I won't be the last. The road changed more than 15 years ago and has not been updated on maps.
Once I got back on track, I could relax and enjoy the amazing scenery of the valley. Along the way, I saw the Apache Resort and Casino. It impressed me in that it is very well maintained and has a private airstrip. I took video clips of some beautiful old aircraft that have been decommissioned, so hope you enjoy it.
It was not long after that when I saw what I thought was another cyclist on the horizon, heading in an easterly direction. After a while, I caught up with him, and we started to chat. Mark, the other cyclist, is doing the same basic route I am doing, and like me, has modified it to cater to his interests. Mark is a retired Navy vet and is also doing this ride unsupported. We stopped at a Native American service station/convenience store and had a good chat.
When we left Mark and I rode together for a while then went our separate ways. Mark turned off to go to a "Warm Showers" guest house, and I carried on to Fort Thomas.
If you see this Mark, I hope you are well, and may the force be with you.
