Day 10 - Tue, Oct 15 - Peoria to Sun Tan Valley (Arizona)

Today was the last stretch to complete Section 1 of this trip in Tempe, Arizona.

The theme for this section so far has been the heatwave that made history with its intensity and endurance. Even my metal flasks which usually keep water cool for several hours, could not cope. And I had certainly never experienced such prolonged high temperatures before.

Riding into Tempe was quite something. I don't know what I had expected, but I certainly did not expect such a big bustling city. I had to remind myself that it is a University city, being home to Arizona State University, and students do make places more vibrant (at least from my perspective).

I also had my first glimpse of the electric self-drive taxis (Waymo). At first, I thought they were Google Maps vehicles doing mapping, until I got a closer look and saw they were taxis. According to local folks I spoke to, there was a very low acceptance level for these vehicles but they are gradually gaining popularity. Unfortunately, I didn't get to ride in one, although I would have loved to.

As mentioned earlier I completed Section 1 of my trip when I reached Tempe. But I had more riding to do; the best part of the day was still to come. A work colleague and friend, Brenda, had invited me to stay over with her and her husband, Robert, whenever I was in the area. They live in Sun Tan Valley, so I took a slight detour to visit them. I was looking forward to seeing her again, and to meeting Robert, as I was not able to attend their wedding. Unfortunately, though, my timing wasn't great, as my arrival coincided with Brenda being away taking care of their grandchild.

But I got to meet Robert, who went all out to make me feel at home. We had steaks on the BBQ, chatted for hours, and shared a good bottle of wine.

This Is Today's Ride
